So I have been doing an art lesson once a week with my kiddos' Kindergarten class. I don't choose the topics or write the lessons. It's a really cool program that someone started in the school district an makes it easy for any parent volunteer to teach art. Very cool.
Anyhow, this month's topic was Gargoyles and Grotesques. Pretty Kindergarten friendly huh? So we talked about sculpture and 2d vs 3d art. That was cool.
Some of the project ideas were to make stain glass windows or a cut paper gargoyle. I decided to use clay and let them craft their own. My clay recipe was found online and used cornstarch, baking soda and water. It was air dry and seemed to be pretty malleable.
I also made a "how to form a Gargoyle face" board with step by step instructions. They were:
1. Roll clay into a ball
2. Pull up the corners to form ears-pointy? round? You decide!
3. Use a tool to make two eyes.
4. Take the center of your ball of clay and pull at it to form a nose. You can stick a tool in it to make nostrils.
5. Take your tool and push it into the clay below your nose to form a mouth. Make it big/small. Add teeth.
6. Now give your gargoyles character. Add horns. Give it a beard. Wrinkle up its face. Have fun.
And as with every time I come into the classroom I realize that my expectation of what the end result will look like is never what they actually produce. They all did a great job. And every gargoyle definitely had it's own character.
